Additional Data Center Space Necessary to meet Customer Colocation and Cloud Computing Growth Trends
DES MOINES, IA – July 27, 2011 – EdgeBCC (a subsidiary of LightEdge Solutions, Inc.) today announced that it has secured $16M of private equity from The Anschutz Investment Company (parent company of LightEdge Solutions) and debt financing from US Bank to double the capacity of its current data center operations in Altoona, IA and buyout the existing owners of the facility, including original general contractor Ball Construction. Through this transition, The Anschutz Investment Company will become the owner of record and LightEdge Solutions will continue to operate and maintain the facility and its power and cooling resources.
Funding will be used to double the currently available data center space available for customer colocation, private cage space and LightEdge Managed Service platforms. The new data center space will be specifically designed to support next-generation high-density platforms by increasing the power delivery and cooling capabilities by over 150%. Through a “sustainable development” process, the most advanced Tier III compliant power and cooling engineering designs and technologies will be used to make the data center quadrants as energy efficient as possible.
“LightEdge’s ability to provide best in class collocation and cage space in addition to our fully managed cloud services business makes us unique in Iowa and the Midwest”, said Jeff Springborn, president and COO of LightEdge. “This expansion will enable the businesses of Iowa and other Midwestern states to continue to transform their IT delivery models to reduce costs and ensure high-availability IT operations.”
The 2.6-acre EdgeBCC property, located near the intersection of I-80 and I-35 in Altoona, IA, together with an option to buy an additional 4.7 acres, can support an expansion of 2 additional similar sized facilities with 4 data center spaces per facility. The location was specifically selected for its ease of access from major markets such as Minneapolis, Kansas City, Omaha and Chicago as well as the fact that Iowa has long been heralded as an ideal location for a data center due to the low costs for power, land, property taxes and specialized IT talent.
Construction of the expanded data center space is anticipated to begin in late Q3 or early Q4 of this year.
