Founded in 2014, OhMD is an AI-powered voice patient communication software and HIPAA-compliant texting platform. Its platform fuses advanced voice and text AI with human oversight to automate routine patient scheduling calls.
The client sought AWS expertise to assume the administration and oversight of its workloads on AWS. OhMD chose to leverage Lightedge for AWS managed services to improve system reliability, security, and continued compliance with HIPAA.
The Challenge
Internal Stability Powered by External Support
OhMD managed an application running in a traditional AWS architecture. OhMD’s environment was K8s-based, running on its EKS cluster. The client was unable to scale this application effectively, encountering a variety of issues around its application and infrastructure.
This caused the client to spend more time focusing on the daily management of its application rather than the application itself. Before Lightedge, the client employed the use of a workflow automation platform. Unfortunately, the solution was unsustainable due to high costs and a non-user-friendly interface. OhMD came to Lightedge requesting an infrastructure as code deployment of its environment on Kubernetes.
The Solution
Custom AI Agent Addresses Scaling Challenges
Lightedge’s proposed solution focused first on creating a custom AI agent using a common framework. This allowed the client to accomplish the same task while removing the cost of the previous workflow automation platform. The client was fortunate in that it did not need to drastically increase its tech footprint to deploy the agent, since the deployment of this agent was relatively small. The solution was able to sit on the client’s existing cluster.
Lightedge enabled the client to iterate rapidly and deploy new features quickly, which led to a second addressable challenge. OhMD began to dive into AI augmentation of its application, specifically targeting message classification. OhMD leveraged another vendor to help it use a common tool to build out workflows for classification. However, the common tool was too expensive to license and was difficult to test and develop on because it wasn’t DevOps-friendly.
The Results
Reduced Scaling Issues, Zero Down Time, and Modernization
With Lightedge’s initial solution deployment, the client had zero scaling issues; all environments were able to move up seamlessly. The client also had zero downtime, which made for a successful outcome for the client’s initial scaling issues.

Ultimately, Lightedge was able to bring the client into a very modern practice for building and deploying applications. Lightedge enabled modern DevOps practices around infrastructure as code, moved application and infrastructure up the life cycle into different environments, and facilitated the scalable use of AI to augment the client’s application capabilities.
